I. Love.
Hamilton.
I
regularly listen to the album while I am at work.
I
sometimes receive raised eyebrows from my co-workers when I get a little too
involved in certain songs.
Such
as…
Calling
out “Here Comes the General” during “Right Hand Man”
In “Stay
Alive,” Washington orders his troops to attack while Charles Lee calls for a
retreat. Washington chews Lee out for shitting the bed at the Battle of Monmouth, and he replaces him with Hamilton Lafayette
Reciting
“The Ten Duel Commandments”
The
interaction between Washington and Hamilton during “Meet Me Inside”
Calling
out “LAFAYETTE” during “Guns and Ships”
Calling
out “ROCHAMBEAU” during “Yorktown (The World Turned Upside Down)”
We had a spy on the inside… That’s right!
HERCULES MULLIGAN!!!!
Dancing
like Thomas Jefferson during “What’d I Miss”
The
two cabinet battles between Hamilton and Jefferson
King
George III’s songs
So…
yeah, I am a bit of a fan.
The
creator of the play, Lin-Manuel Miranda, was inspired to write this play after
reading Alexander Hamilton by Ron
Chernow. At a poetry jam
event at the White House in 2009, Miranda said that he was working on an
album about a founding father that epitomized hip-hop based on the book.
And
people laughed at that idea including President and Mrs. Obama.
Hamilton premiered
Off-Broadway in January 2015, then later on Broadway. The play is scheduled for
a national tour to begin in San Francisco next year which includes a stop in Denver.
I might save some Hamiltons.
Hamilton won many awards; among them several Tony
Awards, a Pulitzer Prize for drama, and a Grammy for Best Musical
Theater Album. The play is also credited
with maintaining Hamilton’s status as the ten-dollar Founding Father.
Miranda along with some of the
cast were invited to the White House to promote the play’s success.
It
also included Miranda freestyling with President Obama in the Rose Garden.
And
yes, the president told a Marine to drop the beat. Why? Because he’s the
president.
There
is a connection between Hamilton and
the 2016 election.
Miranda
plays the subject matter of the play, Alexander Hamilton.
In
July 1804, Hamilton was
killed in the famous duel between him and Aaron Burr, the then
vice-president.
It
was the first time that the vice-president shot a guy until Dick
Cheney in February 2006.
Prior
to being the vice-president, Burr served a single term as a senator from New
York. The seat was later occupied by Robert Kennedy…
Charles
Goodell, the father of the current NFL commissioner Roger, and Daniel Patrick Moynihan.
The
seat today is held by Kristen Gillibrand who was appointed to the seat in 2009
and won the seat in a special election in 2010.
Who
occupied the seat between January 2001 to January 2009?
Miranda
is also a Hillary Clinton supporter.
And
understands politics given that his father was an adviser to former New York City
mayor Ed Koch so he has an idea what goes on in the room where it happens and
how the sausage is made.
On
Monday night at
a Clinton fundraiser event in New York City, the greatest city in the
world, Miranda along with Renée Elise
Goldsberry, who played Angelica
Schuyler Church, preformed a song with some altered lines from “The
World Was Wide Enough” to tell people that it’s
2016 and vote for her.
In
this election, history has its eyes on us.
