“DON’T ASK, DON’T TELL” REPEAL IS SIGNED

“That is why I say to all Americans, gay or straight, who want nothing more than to defend this country in uniform: Your country needs you, your country wants you, and we will be honored to welcome you into the ranks of the finest military the world has ever known.”

“For we are not a nation that says, ‘don’t ask, don’t tell.’ We are a nation that says, ‘Out of many, we are one.’ We are a nation that welcomes the service of every patriot. We are a nation that believes that all men and women are created equal. Those are the ideals that generations have fought for. Those are the ideals that we uphold today. And now, it is my honor to sign this bill into law.”

KEY VOTES THIS WEEKEND

It was posted this evening via facebook by Stace Medellin and later confirmed on Talking Points Memo and The Rachel Maddow Show that Senator Henry Reid (D-NV) has filed a motion for cloture on two pieces of legislation: “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” Repeal and the DREAM Act.

In a cloture motion, there needs to be 60 votes or more in order to end debate. If one OR BOTH passes the 60 vote thresh hold on Saturday, a vote for passage (where you only need 51) would take place on Sunday.

Right now DADT Repeal reportedly has the support of Senate Democrats and a small number of Republicans (Brown, Collins, and Snow) to overcome the 60-vote margin to invoke cloture. The DREAM Act is still up in the air if it will pass the 60-vote mark.

Stay tuned on Saturday and Sunday.

HOW TO FILIBUSTER 101

If you want to see how an actual filibuster is done, turn to C-SPAN 2 or log on to c-span.org or http://sanders.senate.gov/ and watch Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) show how it is done. He began at 9:25 AM CT.

Senator Bernie Sanders is filibustering the Obama Tax Cut plan that would extend unemployment benefits for 13 months and in exchange the Bush Tax Cuts are extended for 2 years for ALL income levels (H.R. 4853).

If you are going to filibuster, do not use it as an empty threat to just block a vote, actually engage in discussion.

The Senate floor is yours, Senator Sanders.
