My picture of the week is one player but it is rather a representation of entire unit. The Chiefs defense held the Patriots to 10 points and recorded 2 sacks and 3 interceptions. One the interceptions was returned for a touchdown by Tyrann Mathieu that kept Kansas City among the ranks of the unbeaten.
After an 0-4 start, the Houston Texans finally did what needed to be done and that was firing Bill O’Brien. As coach, O’Brien compiled a 54-52 record that included winning 4 AFC South titles in his 6 seasons on the Texans’ sidelines. Unfortunately, O’Brien will be known for the Texans’ collapse at eventual Super Bowl champion Kansas City in last season’s divisional round playoff game. The Texans led 24-0, saw that lead evaporate, and eventually end up as a 51-31 loss. Without a doubt, O’Brien should have been fired after that game.
For now, Romeo Crennel is the interim head coach, but it is probably likely that ownership will clean house and begin a head coaching search at the end of the season.
The other story that has dominated NFL news is the continuing COVID-19 pandemic that is putting the completion of the regular season in jeopardy. More players have tested positive for COVID-19, including Patriots cornerback Stephon Gilmore, and it is rumored that as many as three games are in jeopardy. One of the positive tests involves a player Tennessee Titans who have already had a game moved to later in the season due to the pandemic.
I do enjoy seeing sports back on television but at the same time risking the player’s health and lives is just not worth it. If the NFL desires to play a full season, the solution to me would be is to cease the season for two weeks, continuing regularly testing the players and staffs of the team, isolate those that test positive and ensure they recover, do a deep clean and sanitation of facilities, and place teams in regional bubbles based on their divisions such as teams in the NFC East would be in one hub and then travel to game sites. I would not allow fans to attend games until further notice.
Players, coaches, and staff have the option to opt out of the season if they feel it is necessary to do so. The games missed would be inserted into later into the season and push the conclusion of the season deeper into February 2021.
