STEWART/GATES

Robert Gates served in the United States Air Force from 1967-69. He was recruited by the CIA and rose in the ranks to serve in various high ranking intelligence roles for the Reagan and H.W. Bush White House.

Mr. Gates was president of Texas A&M University from August 2002 to December 2006. After the 2006 mid-term elections, then-President Bush nominated Gates to replace Donald Rumsfeld as Secretary of Defense. Gates continued his role as Secretary of Defense during President Barack Obama's first term in office. After retirement, Gates was elected to serve as president of the Boy Scouts of America with his two-year term starting this coming May.

On Wednesday Night, Robert Gates appeared on The Daily Show to discuss his autobiography Duty: Memoirs of a Secretary at War.

The full interview is provided below the break.

2013 NFL SEASON: CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP SUNDAY

Conference Championship Sunday is the final home game of the season for two teams. Two teams will advance to Super Bowl XLVIII while two teams will have to wait until next season for a shot at glory.

Speaking of glory, I finished last week with a perfect 4-0 record to run my playoff record to 6-2. Ms. Roberts is currently 5-3 while Mr. Blake is 4-4.

STAY CLASSY DENTON COUNTY REPUBLICAN PARTY (DOUBLE DOWN)

Remember this posting about statements towards Senators Davis and Van de Putte circulated by Denton County Republican Party Chairwoman Dianne Edmondson?

She apparently doubled down on her statement in this recording of a Denton County Republican Party meeting obtained by the Lone Star Project.

2013 NFL SEASON: DIVISIONAL ROUND

This is a rather odd feeling for me. For the first time in 18 years, the local NFL team is playing a home divisional round playoff game which is odd because I thought local NFL teams don't play in January.

The Cowboys 2007 playoff game in January 2008 does not count because at the time I was in Hampton Roads, VA which 1) doesn't have an NFL franchise and 2) I was there because I was stationed aboard the carrier USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70) assisting with her refueling operation. I'd have to go back to the 1995 playoffs when the Cowboys were the NFC #1 seed and defeated the Eagles, Packers, and Steelers en route to their most recent championship.

Just make a mental note: don't go anywhere near I-25, Colfax Ave, and Federal Blvd. on Sunday. Best to watch the games on television like I always do.

As for our playoff records, Ms. Roberts, Mr. Blake, and I started the playoffs with similar 2-2 records. How we got there was very different.

2013 NFL SEASON: WILD CARD ROUND

Well, I tipped my hand on who I was picking to win in the Wild Card Round in a previous post. Here are my explanations why. Also my fellow football pickers have their own perspectives on the Wild Card Round. Ms. Roberts' picks are here and Mr. Blake's picks are here.
